Letter to Students

Dear New Urban Arts' students,

As you may already know, in a couple weeks, I will be taking on a new role as mom to twin girls. At this time, my role within New Urban Arts will be changing as well. I will be stepping down from my current position as Program Director and taking on a part time position within the organization. This decision has been a very difficult one to make, as I am very connected to New Urban Arts' staff, students, and artist mentors.

So, what does all this mean? A search committee made up of students, staff, board members, and alumni are interviewing new candidates for the Program Director position as you read this letter. A group of students created a list of qualities they want in a new PD and the search committee is working hard to fulfill those goals. This new person will be hired at the end of August and will start the school year with you. There is no doubt in my mind that this person will be amazing, thoughtful, and respectful. As a favor to me, please make them feel comfortable in the studio as you felt when you first arrived at New Urban Arts.

One thing to remember, this new person is not me. They bring their own personality and set of experiences to the table, which are different from mine. It will take time to get to know the new Program Director, but I know this person will be attentive to your needs. Also know that Tyler will be around to make sure this transition goes as smooth as possible.

In November, when I return (although I promise to bring the babes by for a visit beforehand), I will not be around in the afternoon as much but will be accessible to you by email at tamara@newurbanarts.org. My decision to take leave from my job is for the wellness of my new babes, New Urban Arts, and myself. This does not mean that I will not be around for you. You all inspire me to do what I do and be who I am. I would like to still be part of your growth and make sure you are getting to where you need to go. Please don't ever hesitate to contact me; I am always here for you.

You made my last year as Program Director the best ever. I could not have asked for a better group of people with whom to spend my time. You are all amazing in your own way. I am calmed to know that you will be making a difference in this world and my children will grow up to have wonderful role models to look up to. Keep asking questions, pushing the norm, and doing what you do. I am so proud of you all. Remember, become the change you want to see in the world.

Make art. Change the world. I will see you soon.

My best.

Tamara Kaplan
